Real Weddings: Keyona & Steven

After a couple of passing encounters during college, Keyona and Steven caught one another’s eyes during a party thrown by National Pan-Hellenic Greek organizations in Atlanta, GA. Keyona was a nursing student at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, while Steven had transferred from Morehouse College in Atlanta to North Carolina A&T for a dual-degree program in engineering. They shared North Carolina as a commonality, and at that party, they exchanged numbers. Interestingly, the pair did not begin texting each other like crazy after that. In fact, after that party both allowed being out of sight to mean being out of mind, and nothing came of it as each went on to finish out their senior year of college. However, Steven, who works as a senior structural engineer, and Keyona found one another on Instagram. Keyona, now a family nurse practitioner, missed many of Steven’s hints on the app, when he would drop emojis in the comments of her various posts. One day, Keyona posted a selfie of herself working out at the gym and this really piqued Steven’s interest. He scoured through his phone in search of what he was hoping was Keyona’s phone number from all those years prior. Fate seemed to say they were meant to be a couple, because the first unassigned phone number that Steven blindly tried happened to be Keyona’s actual number. Out of the blue, Keyona opens her phone to see a text message from Steven and this is finally where their beautiful love journey begins.

When Steven was preparing to propose and was crafting his plan, he aptly threw Keyona off the scent by telling her for months that “he would never propose during a cliche time” such as a holiday or a birthday. Yet in July of 2021, on Keyona’s birthday, Steven told his future wife that he had planned a special day for them together in celebration of her birthday. Steven liked to create grandiose surprise moments for Keyona for other birthdays and such so thankfully, she wasn’t suspicious about this. He kept the details of their plans secret but told her to dress up nicely. After cocktails overlooking the beautiful city view of New York City, where they now reside, Steven led Keyona on a wandering walk in Central Park. He took her to the Bethesda fountain there and they sat down to reflect on their happiness as a couple. Steven mentioned he wanted her to have a peaceful and calm birthday, then suddenly he was down on bended knee proposing. Keyona was completely shocked and noticed a photographer flashing pictures of the two, capturing their moment that night.
